Project Accountant

MBD is seeking a highly organized, detail-driven Project Accountant to support the financial execution of our projects from kickoff through closeout. This role is ideal for someone with a deep understanding of job costing and construction accounting, and a clear sense of how disciplined financial management supports operational clarity, project health, and client confidence.

Working closely with Project Managers and leadership, the Project Accountant tracks job costs, supports billing, monitors budgets, and helps ensure each project’s financials are accurate, timely, and well managed. This role requires consistency, discretion, and a high standard of follow-through.

This is a key internal position for someone who is comfortable working across departments, managing multiple priorities, and contributing to a company that values precison, accountability, and professionalism. WHAT YOU’LL OWN

From project setup through final closeout, you will maintain the financial integrity of each job by ensuring project accounting is accurate, timely, and aligned with project realities.

Project Financial Management

  • Set up and maintain project financials, including budgets, cost codes, and contract values

  • Maintain accurate job cost reporting and ensure financial data integrity across systems

  • Partner closely with Project Managers to support financial visibility and alignment throughout the project lifecycle

Billing + Revenue Management

  • Prepare and manage monthly billings, including progress billings, time and materials billings, and change orders

  • Track billing status, cash flow, and collections

  • Ensure billing is accurate, timely, and aligned with contract terms and project progress

  • Track lien waivers and compliance documentation

  • Help improve financial tracking and reporting processes over time

Budget + Forecasting

  • Partner with Project Managers during month-end close to validate project financials and forecasts

  • Support financial planning with clear, data-driven insights

  • Help identify budget variances, missing cost exposure, and reporting inconsistencies

Subcontractor + Vendor Financials

  • Track subcontractor commitments, purchase orders, and vendor agreements

  • Ensure proper documentation is in place, including insurance, lien releases, and related compliance items, prior to Accounts Payable issuing payment

Closeout + Portfolio Reporting

  • Support accurate financial closeout of projects, ensuring all costs, billings, and documentation are complete

  • Reconcile project accounts and ensure alignment between budgets, actuals, and final contract values

  • Support audit requests with accurate documentation and clear explanations

WHAT IT TAKES

  • 3+ years of experience in construction accounting, job cost accounting, or project accounting

  • A strong understanding of job costing, construction billing, and project financial reporting

  • Experience managing progress billing, time and materials billing, and change orders

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel

  • Proficiency in accounting and ERP systems; QuickBooks Desktop required, with Innergy, Procore, GC Pay, Textura, or similar platforms considered a plus

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail

  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines across active projects

  • Clear communication skills and the ability to partner effectively with Project Managers, leadership, and internal teams

  • Strong organizational discipline and the ability to maintain accurate, audit-ready records

  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, detail-driven environment
